Zoetrope Experience

Zoetrope (Greek for “Wheel of Life”) was the name given to an animation device that was invented in the 1830s and remained popular throughout the 19th century. The device consists of a slotted cylinder, or drum, containing animation strips and discs that spin on a wooden stand. By viewing the spinning animation through slits in the drum, the blur of color is broken into a rapid succession of sequential images producing the illusion of motion.

Zoetrope Experience is a browser based toy where you can spin a virtual zoetrope. Test the different animations, explore the magic of a zoetrope.

Instructions:

1. Left click to select an artwork for animation, the selected artwork is highlighted.

2. When you have chosen the artwork pull the lever to spin the zoetrope.

3. Go up the stairs and look into the zoetrope, wait for the zoetrope to reach full speed to see the animation.

4. The zoetrope will eventually slow down and come to a stop. Afterwards, choose another artwork and pull the lever again to view an animation.

Controls:

When an object is within range and interactable it will shine yellow; LEFT CLICK to interact.

Press the ARROW BUTTONS to move.

To lock the MOUSE, click on the screen then move the MOUSE to turn around.

Press `ESC` to return control of the mouse.
